Why Hire an Apprentice? A Quick Guide

An apprenticeship is like an internship, but the main difference is there is additional training around the role. The training takes up approximately 10-20% of an apprentice's time away from the role and will be delivered by an Ofsted rated Training Provider. The apprenticeship itself is 12 months long culminating with the apprentice receiving a nationally recognised qualification at the end. The employer will also be able to retain the apprentice in a permanent capacity if they choose.

How it works:

  • An apprentice's legal base salary is £7.55 per hour
(employers are at liberty to pay more) - If you choose to keep the apprentice beyond 12 months then the wage rises to NMW.
  • The apprentice will work with you for a minimum of 30hrs per week (Max 40)
  • The training provider will require the apprentice once or twice a month (depending on course choice) for a training day (remote). The apprentice will be working toward 'End Point Assessment' where they will be awarded recognised accreditation in their chosen pathway.
  • To start the process, a Job Description is required. Ideally, at least 60% of the role would resonate with the course pathway.
  • The role is advertised by the training provider via multiple vacancy platforms, then a pool of the best applicants is forwarded for you to select interviewees . Applicants will normally be 19+ and will be from varied backgrounds.
  • Whilst recruitment is in progress employers need to register with DAS (Digital Apprenticeship Pathway) - Training providers can assist in that process.
  • Apprentices can work from your office, remotely or from co-working spaces.
  • Training providers can also train up your existing staff in one of the pathways below without the requirement of hiring a new apprentice.
